World Cup 2026: Can Ecuador Save Their Campaign?

Ecuador vs Germany

World Cup 2026 Group E comes to a conclusion on Thursday and there is a fascinating prospect at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where group leaders Germany face South American hopefuls Ecuador, who need a win to ensure progression to the Round of 32.

With two victories from two games Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany are already there but Ecuador boss Sebastian Beccacece needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat if he is to turn around la Tricolor’s fortunes. A 1-0 loss to the Ivory Coast and then a frustrating goalless stalemate with the minnows of Curacao have left Ecuador’s hopes hanging on a thread, while Germany are already looking forward to the knockout phase, having missed out in recent World Cups.

It will be one of the biggest World Cup 2026 results of the tournament so far if Ecuador were to upset the odds and beat Germany; and they’ll have to up their game quickly to have a chance.

Talking Points

Schlotterbeck’s tournament is over

World Cup 2026: Nico Schlotterbeck suffered an ankle injury during Germany’s match against Ivory Coast
Nico Schlotterbeck in action for Germany against Ghana

Die Mannschaft are safely through to the Round of 32 but it has not all been plain sailing for Nagelsmann and his team, and they have just received the news that centre back Nico Schlotterbeck is out of the World Cup. The Borussia Dortmund star picked up a nasty ankle injury during the hard earned 2-1 win over Ivory Coast and was withdrawn at half time. His boss said Schlotterbeck did well to last until thew half time break and on Monday it was confirmed that he has suffered a serious ligament injury and will be out for months rather than weeks. Real Madrid star Antonio Rudiger replaced Schlotterbeck against the Ivory Coast, and he is likely to partner Bayern Munich’s Jonathan Tah going forward.

The loss of Schlotterbeck is a blow but Germany can be pleased to have led the way in winning two from two, along with hosts Mexico, and the United States, and the latest World Cup 2026 betting odds make Nagelsmann’s side the sixth favourites now, just ahead of Brazil and the Netherlands.

Two goals from VfB Stuttgart star Denis Undav gave Germany a 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast and he was on target too in the 7-1 hammering of Curacao. Schlotterbeck scored as well while Kai Havertz bagged a double and skipper Joshua Kimmich made two assists while Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz made one. This is a well-balanced attacking side which has plenty of scoring options, with Jamal Musiala a quality creative winger alongside Havertz or Undav.

Tricolor needs to find a cutting edge

Ecuador came second in the CONMEBOL South American qualifiers, ahead of Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay and were unbeaten throughout 2025 and 2026 and they put together that superb run thanks to a watertight defence, which conceded just five goals from their ten games leading up to the World Cup finals. During the CONMEBOL campaign Ecuador conceded just five goals in 18 games; but they only scored 14.

Now La Tricolor have to find a cutting edge and quickly. Against Curacao there was no lack of intent as they rained down 27 shots, an impressive 15 on target but none could beat inspired keeper Eloy Roon. Enner Valencia had seven shots, and he missed a one on one with Roon in just the third minute. Somehow La Tricolor needs to keep out the Germany attack and score themselves, with Valencia and Moises Caicedo the players most likely to make something happen.

History

Germany are at their 21st World Cup finals and are aiming to equal Brazil’s record of five tournament wins, having been World Champions in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. Ecuador are here for the fifth time, and they reached the Round of 16 back in 2006.

In terms of recent form Germany have won their last six games scoring a whopping 21 goals along the way, while Ecuador have won two, drawn three and lost one of their last six.

Betting Tip

Ecuador are at SBOTOP odds of 3.65 to get the win they desperately need with the draw at 3.90 and a Germany victory is odds on at 1.92. I think la Tricolor will struggle to get the goals they need and keep a clean sheet against such a free-scoring side. A 1-1 draw is the most likely score line with 1-0 to Germany next in line at 7.95, and 2-0 to Die Mannschaft at 8.75. I think we’re about to say goodbye to Ecuador.
