The Serie A season remains on hold, especially since Italy has been severely hit due to the coronavirus pandemic.
With around 135,000 confirmed cases and 17,000 deaths as of this writing, the resumption of Italy’s top-flight football league may be the last thing on their minds right now.
The Serie A board, like others, are trying to be optimistic on when will the festivities resume especially since we’re in a tight race to the championship.
Juventus and Lazio are in a two-way gauntlet prior to the season’s suspension in what was somewhat a breath of fresh air for fans and pundits alike since our Serie A 2020 odds couldn’t predict any clear-cut winners this time around.
But even though the action has stopped for the meantime, these Serie A teams have been preparing to make some big moves which should boost their chances one way or another.
With that said, allow SBOBET to give you a roundup on some Serie A 2020 updates.
Players and management dealing with pay cut dispute
Perhaps the hottest news lately was the outrage from players and managers when the Serie A committee decided to cut their wages by a third in order to cope with the financial losses due to the coronavirus outbreak.
As a response, the players’ association criticised the league board for their behaviour, citing that the decision is “incomprehensible at a time like this”.
“The desire, not so much implied, of wanting to dump on the players — putting them in a bad light — the economic damage resulting from the crisis situation, is a fact that makes you reconsider the entrepreneurial credibility of those who should be guiding the football system at this difficult time,” said in their statement.
Serie A has been suspended since the nationwide lockdown imposed by the government over a month ago. Around 15 players were confirmed to have contracted COVID-19.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic coveted by Manchester United
It’s no secret that the Red Devils are still looking for a Paul Pogba replacement, and they are eyeing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to be put alongside their newcomers in Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo.
This is old news already for the Serbian’s camp as this was the narrative before. But despite United’s failed attempt last summer, they remain persistent in bringing the 25-year-old midfielder over at the Old Trafford.
And while United have reportedly begun talks with Milinkovic-Savic’s agents, they will face stiff competition from the likes of Real Madrid, PSG, and Juventus.
PSG in particular have been reported to be willing to break the bank for the Serbian sensation. In fact, they were preparing a huge bid for him since they are a huge fan of his play.
But getting him will come at a steep price as Milinkovic-Savic’s deal with Lazio runs up to 2024. So any club that would want his services would have to meet Lazio’s asking price of around 100-M euros.
AC Milan chasing Timo Werner
Timo Werner is still the hottest commodity in football right now after scoring 21 goals in 25 Bundesliga games with RB Leipzig this season.
Liverpool are reportedly in prime position to acquire the German wunderkind, but another club in AC Milan remain ambitious in making a move to counter the Premier League giants.
With the Rossoneri looking to seal the deal with RB Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick, a part of the move talks about trying to convince Werner to follow Rangnick to Milan where he could partner with Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front.
Despite Werner being valued at a high price of 60-M euros, AC Milan have expressed their willingness to go all-in as an attempt to try and re-establish themselves in Serie A for the foreseeable future.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic exploring his options
Speaking of Ibrahimovic, the 38-year-old knows that he still got it and he is exploring all possibilities on where to play next season.
This is in stark contrast to a prior report saying that he is done playing already as he was preparing for a managerial career. But regardless of what happens, it’s safe to say that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has enjoyed quite a stellar career in football.
He has been one of Europe’s finest strikers over the past decade and has won championships with Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United, and PSG.
AC Milan are reportedly trying to extend him, who has had a great impact for the club since his return last January. He was brought in during the transfer window when the Rossoneri were in dire need of production up front with Krzysztof Piatek moving to Hertha BSC.
