Premier League: City and Villa Have Been Proactive Thus Far

Despite being known as one of the richest leagues in the world, the Premier League has generally been silent so far in the ongoing winter transfer window, as we haven’t seen much big moves, especially from the Top 6 clubs. Perhaps the league’s PSR has forced the clubs to become more prudent with their finances, especially since none of them can afford to lose precious points in the English top-flight table. Just ask Everton and Nottingham Forest

As of this writing, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Ipswich Town have made the key moves to bolster their rosters and Premier League 2025 odds, while Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea, among others, are still waiting for the right deal/s to come.

We only have less than two weeks left in the winter transfer window, so there’s a huge sense of urgency for all 20 clubs. Without further ado, here are some of the latest notable Premier League 2025 updates, courtesy of SBOTOP.

Manchester City already planning ahead

Manchester City are unlikely to win the Premier League this season. The Sky Blues are fifth in the table with 38 points, trailing by 12 points behind frontrunners Liverpool. As a result, Pep Guardiola and co. are already looking ahead to next term.

Manchester City started the year by handing Erling Haaland a mammoth 9.5-year contract extension to prolong his stay at the Etihad. The Norwegian striker deserves it since he has been one of their most consistent players since he arrived from Borussia Dortmund. To compensate for the sale of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid last summer, the Sky Blues also secured an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush (to back up Haaland), who is one of the most in-form strikers in Europe today.

The Sky Blues also addressed their depleted backline (especially with Kyle Walker leaving) by signing youngsters Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis. Khusanov recently played for Lens in Ligue 1, while Reis hails from Palmeiras in Brazil. To cap it off, they also added Claudio Echiverri from River Plate as a long-term project in midfield.

Whether you love or hate them, Manchester City’s batting average in the transfer market has been superb in the past few years. It’ll be interesting to see how their new reinforcements would pan out.

Aston Villa get an enigma

Aston Villa are determined to secure a Top 4 finish in the Premier League again
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery gestures from the touchline during a Premier League match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium

Aston Villa are two notches below Manchester City in the Premier League table and aim to make it to the Top 4 again. Unai Emery’s side has taken a step in the right direction this transfer window by acquiring Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund following their sale of Jaden Philogene to Ipswich Town.

Malen can play either as a winger or as a striker. The Netherlands international and former Arsenal academy player scored 13 goals for the Yellow Wall to help BVB reach the Champions League final last season. With Ross Barkley and John McGinn dealing with injuries, Malen will provide much-needed depth in the final third alongside Ollie Watkins and super-sub Jhon Duran. The 26-year-old made it to the Villans’ matchday squad against Arsenal, but he didn’t enter the match. He will likely make his Premier League debut against West Ham United on Sunday.

Moreover, Aston Villa also completed the signing of Andres Garcia from Levante. The 21-year-old can play either as a right-back or as a right-sided winger. Garcia has notched three goals and three assists in 22 league matches for Levante in the Segunda Division this season. He will provide competition for Matty Cash and Kosta Nedeljkovic.

Manchester United, Arsenal must make a move

Manchester United desperately need a left-sided wing-back, and they’re already in talks with Lecce for Patrick Dorgu, who has recorded three goals and one assist in 20 Serie A matches this season. Lecce want at least £34 million for the 20-year-old Dutch star. Besides a left-back, the Red Devils also need a central midfielder, a goalscoring striker, and one more centre-back, but they’re cash-strapped. Ruben Amorim must sell players for additional funds. Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Kobbie Mainoo are reportedly being dangled in the transfer market.

Arsenal also need a goalscoring striker since Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus aren’t exactly that. Their admiration for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak has been well-documented. However, the Magpies will likely demand an exorbitant transfer fee for the Big Swede.

The Gunners trail by six points behind Liverpool and pulling off this move could help swing the tides in their favour. Meanwhile, the Red Devils desperately need a shot in the arm since they’re closer to the relegation zone than they are in the Top 4.
