Suwon Samsung Bluewings vs Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors
Suwon Bluewings did Jeonbuk Hyundai a huge favour last time out by holding leaders Ulsan Hyundai to a goalless draw. That allowed the defending champions to cut their deficit over rivals Ulsan atop the K-League standings to a single point.
And now, Suwon stand in the way of Jeonbuk potentially returning to the top of the table as they host the champions this weekend.
The K-League 2020 betting odds have Jeonbuk as the clear favourites to pick up the win, but Suwon gave them all they could handle in their first meeting this season and will be eager to take more points off the title contenders.
Talking Points
Suwon coming off surprise result
Suwon Bluewings just had by far the best of their K-League 2020 results as they held leaders Ulsan Hyundai — who had won five straight games — to a goalless draw.
The Bluewings’ defence held up well against Ulsan’s league-leading attacking, which had 17 attempts on goal, but only five of which were on target.
Despite their struggles this season — Suwon are still second from bottom in the table — the Bluewings have been tough to break down defensively. They have conceded just 17 goals this season, the fourth-best defensive record in the league.
It’s been on the offensive end where Suwon have suffered this season. They have scored just 13 goals in 15 matches, the third-fewest in the league.
Caretaker manager Seung-jin Joo, who took over after the resignation of Lee Lim-saeng last month, decided to start Sulejman Krpic over Adam Taggart as the lone striker against Ulsan.
Krpic scored one of his two goals this season against Ulsan, but he was unable to recreate that magic. Much like Taggart, the Bosnian has not made the impact on the attack as Suwon expected.
It remains to be seen whether Taggart will be set to return to the starting line-up after sitting out against Ulsan. The Aussie has scored just four goals this year after leading the league with 18 last season.
Jeonbuk looking good
Jeonbuk picked up a much-needed 2-0 win in their matchup against dangerous Daegu FC last time out as they closed the gap on Ulsan to just a single point.
Kim Bo-Kyung bagged a first-half brace to lead the Warriors to victory. The 30-year-old is in fine form of late. He also scored the winning goal in their 2-1 win over Pohang Steelers in their previous match.
Jeonbuk were brilliant against Daegu as they had 16 total shots and had a decided 7-1 edge in terms of shots on target. Although, they were somewhat fortunate to face a Daegu side that did not start their star Brazilian duo of Cesinha and Edgar.
Speaking of Brazilians, Gustavo played 90 minutes for the first time since his arrival in Jeonbuk. The 26-year-old striker has gone scoreless in his last two games after grabbing four in his first two appearances for the club.
He is likely to keep his spot in the starting line-up and will be crucial in breaking down Suwon’s stingy defence.
Jeonbuk’s own defence remains as formidable as they come. After their run of three matches without a win, they have shored up their backline by conceding just once in their last three games.
They have conceded just nine goals all season, which remains the best defensive record in the league. Although, it should be noted that they have given up six of those nine goals away from home.
History
Jeonbuk have utterly dominated Suwon in recent years. The Warriors have won seven out of their last 10 meetings, with Suwon winning just once since 2018.
Suwon have beaten Jeonbuk just five times in their last 35 meetings. Jeonbuk have won 20 times, with 10 draws.
However, Suwon gave Jeonbuk quite a battle when they met in the opening match of the season. Jeonbuk needed an 86th-minute goal from Lee Dong-Gook to score a narrow 1-0 home win, and that only came after Suwon went down to 10-men in the 77th minute.
Betting Tip
Suwon Samsung Bluewings vs Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors | Under 2.50 @ 1.98 | |
August 16, 18:00 (GMT+8) |
Unsurprisingly, SBOBET odds have Jeonbuk priced as significant 1.63 favourites to get the away win, while Suwon are a mere 5.40 at home. A draw is 3.55.
However, there is more value in taking the under instead of Jeonbuk in the 1X2 market.
Jeonbuk and Suwon are two teams that are good at keeping things tight at the back. So much like their first meeting this season, don’t expect to see too many goals in this match.
