K-League: Collapsing Champions Face Must-Win Match with FC Seoul

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs FC Seoul

The reigning K-League champions are in crisis. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors have now gone winless in their last three matches, which has allowed rivals Ulsan to open up a three-point lead at the top of the standings.

Jeonbuk must now take on second-from-bottom FC Seoul in a match that has suddenly turned into a must-win affair as they risk losing more ground to Ulsan.

The K-League 2020 betting odds fancy Jeonbuk’s chances of claiming that much-needed win, but after failing to beat bottom-club Incheon United last time out, it may not be as straightforward as it might seem.

Talking Points

Jeonbuk still can’t shake off slump

Jeonbuk are in trouble. The Warriors’ winless run has now extended to three matches after back-to-back draws against two sides in the bottom half of the standings — at home to Seongnam FC and away to Incheon United, who are rock bottom with just four points in 12 games.

Jeonbuk boss Jose Morais will be disappointed with his side, not only because the champions fell behind early in both matches, but also that they conceded to two of the least prolific goalscoring teams in the entire league. Prior to those two matches, Jeonbuk had conceded just five goals in their first 10 games.

Aside from that suddenly leaky defence, Morais also has to be a bit concerned about the attack, which remains underwhelming. Midfield Han Gyo-Won is having a fine season with five goals, but they are still lacking a striker who can consistently provide goals.

The 41-year-old Lee Dong-Gook has four goals in six appearances, but he is currently injured and can’t be relied upon to play at a consistent basis given his advanced age.

After letting go of South African striker Lars Veldwijk, who has since moved on to FC Suwon, Cho Kyu-sung has been deputising up front. But the 22-year-old has only one goal to his name in 10 appearances this season.

The champions couldn’t have asked for a better matchup to help them rediscover the scoring touch, though, as they take on an FC Seoul team that’s conceded the most goals this season by a wide margin.

FC Seoul back on a losing skid

FC Seoul are stuck in another losing streak. After ending their five-game skid with a win over Incheon United and a thrilling 3-3 draw at fellow strugglers Suwon Bluewings, they have since lost 2-0 to Busan I’Park and 3-1 to Pohang Steelers as they remain tied for second-bottom with Suwon with 10 points.

Things were looking good for Seoul as they took a first-half lead against Pohang. But they were unable to hold onto their advantage as Pohang piled on the pressure in the second half.

Their loss to Pohang was already the fifth time FC Seoul have conceded three or more goals this season. They have conceded 26 goals in total, which is six more than the next closest team.

And on the other end of the pitch, their attack still hasn’t been able to produce enough goals. They’ve scored only 10 goals, tied for the third-fewest in the league. Park Chu-Young, last year’s top scorer with 10 goals, has had a slow start to the season with just two goals in nine appearances.

Although, Young-Wook Cho is showing some promise. After scoring the opener against Pohang, the 21-year-old has now scored in two of his last three games.

History

Jeonbuk have absolutely dominated FC Seoul in recent years. They are unbeaten in each of their last 10 meetings, with eight wins and two draws.

Jeonbuk thrashed FC Seoul 4-1 away in their first meeting back in June, which happens to be the champions’ highest-scoring game of the season. FC Seoul’s last win away to Jeonbuk came all the way back in 2016.

Betting Tip

??
Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs FC Seoul Over 2.50 @ 1.91
July 26, 18:00(GMT+8)

Despite their recent slump, SBOBET odds still have Jeonbuk as overwhelming favourites at 1.47, with FC Seoul priced at 6.00. A draw is 4.30.

Jeonbuk may have slipped up against Seongnam and Incheon, but it seems hard not to see them ending their skid against FC Seoul.

Seoul’s defence is the worst in the league, and even with their problems scoring goals, Jeonbuk put four past them in their first meeting this season.

That’s why I expect another relatively high-scoring affair, with Jeonbuk contributing the majority of the goals.
