International Friendly: Neighbours Gear Up for Stateside Summer

Switzerland vs Germany

My views on International Friendly matches, particularly at this time of year, are well documented.

To put it mildly, this SBOTOP soccer scribe feels they are unnecessary distractions at a point in the campaign where many players have crucial club commitments in an already congested calendar.

Judging by the number of Arsenal withdrawals (and there are other clubs) from respective international squads in recent days actually highlights my point about priorities and the need not to be engaging with additional international games. The creation of the Nations League in 2018 further enhanced my viewpoint.

However, I would say this stance is somewhat softened in a World Cup year and, with just 77 days until the start of the Stateside showpiece, this clash between neighbours in Basel should be worth watching.

Talking Points

Germany were my tip to triumph in their most recent major tournament, Euro 2024, only for the hosts to lose out at the quarter-final stage to eventual champions Spain.

I fancy them to do well this summer too, so I was rather surprised to learn that their highly rated coach Julian Nagelsmann isn’t flavour of the month at home right now.

Yes, they’ve qualified but, for a nation which usually runs a tight ship, there is talk of some infighting.

That is the last thing the camp will want as the four-time world champions aim to avoid a repeat of more recent World Cup woes – in 2022 they bowed out at the group stage for the second successive tournament.

So, can the Mannschaft calm any doubts?

Certainly, according to some media outlets, the mood appears to have turned against Nagelsmann in some quarters since Euro 2024, even though their qualifying campaign was negotiated with five wins and just one defeat.

German fans are reportedly hungry to see teenagers Lennart Karl and Said El Mala involved and more adventure, while Nagelsmann keeps faith with tried-and-tested players such as Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka.

Lennart Karl could be handed his senior Germany debut in the international friendly against Switzerland

Yet such criticism appears harsh and there is an irony that Nagelsmann could well hand Karl his international debut against the Swiss or in next week’s second friendly encounter against Ghana.

Should the talented Bayern Munich man deliver International Friendly 2026 highlights, the clamour for his inclusion this summer will grow.

The 18-year-old winger is one of two new faces in the 26-man squad after contributing 14 goals in all competitions during his breakout senior campaign.

Karl – who scored three goals in his first two Germany Under-21 appearances last November – is joined in the team by club-mate and fellow first-time call-up Jonas Urbig.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper has filled in for former Germany captain Manuel Neuer on a number of occasions this season and is widely seen as his long-term successor at Bayern (and perhaps for his country).

Switzerland, meanwhile, have constantly impressed me. Coached by Murat Yakin, they have a crop of established pros and emerging young talents and finished their qualifying group unbeaten despite failing to beat Slovenia and Kosovo in their last two games away from home.

Former Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern defender Yakin will be leading them for the third time in a major tournament after quarter-final exits in the 2022 World Cup and European Championships the previous year.

The Swiss have had to make a late change to their squad, dominated by past and present Bundesliga players, with Noah Okafor replacing the injured Filip Ugrinić. After this one, Yakin’s side will face Norway in Oslo to conclude the first international break of 2026.

History

Eren Derdiyok scored a hat-trick inside the first 50 minutes when the sides last met at St. Jakob-Park in a friendly in 2012.

Switzerland won that memorable fixture 5-3 with fellow ex-Bayer Leverkusen player Tranquillo Barnetta providing all the assists for Derdiyok’s solitary international treble.

Mats Hummels and Marco Reus scored their first goals for Germany, then managed by Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Including a 1-1 draw in the group stage of Euro 2024 – when Germany needed an injury-time equaliser from Niclas Fulkrug to cancel out Dan Ndoye’s opener – the last three meetings have all ended in draws.

The overall record is dominated by the heavyweights of Germany who have 35 wins compared to nine Swiss successes and nine draws.

Their first ever contest was a 1908 friendly, also in Basel, which the Swiss won 5-3. Their scorers that day were Hans Kampfer (two), Daniel Hug and Dr Siegfri Pfeiffer (two).

Betting Tip

Our International Friendly 2026 betting odds make Germany favourites, priced 1X2 @ 2.05 compared to the hosts 1X2 @ 2.86. Similarly with Asian Handicap odds, bets include Germany -0.25 @ 1.96 and Switzerland 0.00 @ 2.25. I think both managers will use this meeting to take a close look at some of the fringe players in their squads and, possibly, one or two youngsters. I am plumping for a fourth successive draw.

A SHORT EXPLANATION ON HOW OUR (⭐) BETS ARE WORTH:
