International Friendly: Bielsa’s Boys Head to Wembley

England vs Uruguay

Thomas Tuchel’s England will begin the next leg of their World Cup preparations on Friday night when Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay are set to provide a stiff test for the Three Lions.

Under Tuchel, who has been at the helm for 15 months, England became the first European nation to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, winning six matches from six by October 2025. Meanwhile, Bielsa, the former Leeds United manager, led Uruguay to qualification by finishing fourth in the South American qualifying table, above Brazil along the way.

The Argentine will bring a strong squad to meet England, who will also play Japan, New Zealand, and Costa Rica in International Friendly games before the World Cup begins in June. I reckon La Celeste will provide the toughest examination of the Three Lions over the next couple of months.

While another of the world’s best football nations, Italy, are in a play-off scuffle, these two heavyweights are fine-tuning, and both will be determined to get it right, each with ambitions to go deep into the competition when hostilities begin in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.

Talking Points

No Kane or Saka for the Three Lions

With Croatia, Panama, and Ghana awaiting England at the World Cup finals, the players have little time to impress Tuchel before he picks his final squad, and some of the fringe stars will get a head start on Friday, as a number of the big names will join the squad for the clash against Japan next week.

Harry Kane will not be playing in England's international friendly with Uruguay at Wembley Stadium
England captain Harry Kane celebrates with fans after beating Albania during their World Cup 2026 qualifier back in 2025

Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Nico O’Reilly, and Morgan Rogers are among the 11 who will sit out the game against Uruguay. And with Eberechi Eze withdrawn through injury and Ollie Watkins and Trent Alexander-Arnold omitted, there is a chance for the likes of Jude Bellingham, now recovered from injury, and the recalled Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

There has also been a call up for Newcastle United’s attacking midfielder Harvey Barnes, who has recently turned down a chance to represent Scotland, which makes a lot of sense, as he was born in Burnley. Barnes has been superb for the Magpies again this season, and he deserves his long-awaited chance on the international stage. And there is a place too for Manchester United’s forgotten man Kobbie Mainoo, who is keen to make his mark again after his career stalled at Old Trafford.

Gimenez and Valverde lead La Celeste

While Bielsa likes his teams to play attacking football, La Celeste is renowned for its uncompromising style of play and is led by a dominant centre-back in Jose Maria Gimenez. The Atletico Madrid star learned his trade from the legendary Diego Godin, and he is one of Uruguay’s biggest stars.

Another player sure to make plenty of International Friendly 2026 highlights is vice-captain Federico Valverde, who has just had one hell of a fortnight. A couple of weeks ago, the Real Madrid man scored a stunning hat-trick to beat Manchester City in the Champions League. And last weekend, he was sent off in the Madrid Derby, which Los Blancos won by the odd goal in five.

Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo and Al-Hilal striker Darwin Nunez are also in Bielsa’s team, which looks forward to meeting Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde, and Spain at the World Cup finals. And Premier League fans will also get a chance to see Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, though former Liverpool star Luis Suarez retired from international football in 2024.

History

Both England and Uruguay are World Cup winners, the Three Lions in 1966 and La Celeste twice, way back in 1930 and 1950. They have met each other 11 times, with Uruguay leading by five wins to three, but the two nations have not been pitched together since 2014 when Luis Suarez scored twice in a 2-1 victory for La Celeste.

Last year, England won nine and lost just one game, a home friendly against Senegal. Meanwhile, in 2025, Uruguay won four games, drew three, and lost three, starting the year with a 1-0 defeat to reigning World Champions Argentina and ending it with a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of USA in a friendly.

But in between those two losses, a consistent run in the qualifiers saw them book their place for the 2026 showcase.

Betting Tip

The latest International Friendly 2026 betting odds currently rate Tuchel’s side as second favourites to win the trophy, behind European Champions Spain, and England are hot favourites to win this clash at SBOTOP odds of 1.49, with Uruguay a long shot at 6.25. But without Kane, the Three Lions will play La Celeste without their most potent threat, and I can see the honours finishing even at Wembley on Friday night in a match filled with enough International Friendly 2026 highlights.
