Champions League: A Clash Fit for a King

Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich

Of the eight teams remaining in this season’s Champions League, no other clash will quite be able to match the prestige of this one.

For this is a match-up which would grace any occasion as two of the great names in the game meet for what should be a pulsating 180 minutes (at least) of football.

Champions League 2026 highlights await in Munich and, first, Madrid.

Talking Points

The two teams come into this heavyweight clash after polar opposite Easter weekends.

In La Liga, Real Madrid must have felt they had earned a point at basement battlers Mallorca when Eder Militao – a player they have really missed when he has been injured – headed home an 88th minute corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

In the first minute of stoppage time, though, the dangerous Vedat Muriqi struck his 19th league goal of the campaign to earn the home side a famous and much-needed win.

Over in Germany, Bayern Munich produced a late show of their own in a contest they had no right to win.

With 10 minutes remaining, the Bavarians trailed 2-0 at spirited Freiburg – Johan Manzambi and Lucas Holer their marksmen – and seemed like they may be slipping to only their second Bundesliga defeat of the campaign.

Yet no-one had anticipated two young guns pulling the match around.

Left-back Tom Bischof was first as he produced two fine strikes from outside the penalty area, the second in the 92nd minute, which appeared to have rescued a point.

Quite why so much stoppage time was played was beyond me but 99 minutes were on the clock when highly-rated 18 year-old Lennart Karl converted a low cross from Alphonso Davies to win it and maintain their nine point lead at the summit.

If the German title race has long been over, Real’s defeat has surely ended their La Liga hopes, meaning all the pressure is on the Spanish giants in midweek.

My view on the decision to appoint Alvaro Arbeloa to the Real hotseat is widely documented and Bayern, who may well be without England captain and top scorer Harry Kane, were my tip to win the tournament at the start of the season.

With key players returning – Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior were on the bench on Saturday – Los Blancos are more than capable of proving their worth on the European stage again but will need a performance at the level they showed against Manchester City in the last 16 to keep their season alive.

History

What a history!

With 13 Real successes, 11 Bayern triumphs and five draws, it could barely be closer.

Two seasons ago they met in the semi-finals.

The sides shared four goals in Bavaria with a double from Vinicius Jr, the second an 83^rd minute penalty, arriving either side of two goals in four second half minutes from Leroy Sane and Kane (penalty).

The second leg summed up the mantra of Real in this competition: they just don’t know when they are beaten.

Alphonso Davies had Bayern gearing up for an all-German final before substitute Joselu scored twice in the last seconds (88 and 90+1) to turn it around and seal a 4-3 aggregate success.

Before then, they also met in the semi-finals in 2018 when Real were inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, despatching Bayern, Juventus and Paris St Germain en route to breaking Liverpool’s hearts in the final with that Gareth Bale goal.

A first leg win at Bayern, secured by goals from Marcelo and Marco Asensio after Joshua Kimmichhad put Bayern in front, was followed by a 2-2 draw between the sides in the second leg.

Karim Benzema’s double effectively sealed the tie with Kimmich (again) and James Rodriguez on target for Bayern.

Their very first meeting came in the semi-finals of this competition, then the European Cup, in 1976.

A first leg draw in Madrid saw a Roberto Martinez (not the current Portugal manager) cancelled out by the great Gerd Muller and it was Bayern who prevailed to the final with a 2-0 second leg home win, thanks to a Muller double.

Bayern went onto defeat Saint-Etienne of France to win the trophy for the third successive year.
