France Face Uncomfortable Questions Ahead of Final International Friendly

France vs Northern Ireland

France’s World Cup 2026 preparations haven’t gone according to plan, as they suffered a surprising 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast yesterday, prompting questions for Didier Deschamps’ side. They have a chance to bounce back when they face Northern Ireland for their next International Friendly, and they might take it more seriously than expected.

Les Bleus are labelled as one of the prohibitive favourites for the quadrennial tournament, but building fitness and momentum is more important for them. Still, the International Friendly 2026 odds expect Les Bleus to beat Northern Ireland on Monday night in Lille, and it would be shocking if they lose for the second game in a row.

Northern Ireland are among those who will watch the World Cup from home after failing to progress through the UEFA qualifiers. So, now is the time for the Green and White Army to start building their foundation for the next one.

Learn more about these two nations in today’s SBOTOP match preview.

Talking Points

France keen to avoid unwanted history

France went into their exhibition game against Ivory Coast as the heavy favourites. But they came out with a 2-1 loss, as they squandered a one-goal lead. Manchester City midfielder Rayan Cherki put Les Bleus ahead before halftime, but everything unraveled for them in the second half.

Head coach Didier Deschamps shuffled his entire lineup, and Guela Doue, playing against his brother, Desire, scored the equaliser in the 53rd minute. He then teed up Amad Diallo to slot home the matchwinner with six minutes before stoppage time.

After the game, Deschamps acknowledged that his team lost control after halftime and took accountability for his mistake. He warned that France will face opponents with similar qualities (or better) to Ivory Coast at the World Cup, starting against Senegal on June 16 at MetLife Stadium. Still, France should have enough quality to see this through, especially with a scary front line of Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembele.

Thursday’s defeat to Ivory Coast is the first time since France lost 1-0 to China in their final warm-up before the 2010 World Cup. What happened after that was one of the most catastrophic World Cup collapses ever, as Les Bleus were eliminated at the group stage, finishing dead last in a group that had Mexico, Uruguay, and hosts South Africa.

At the time, star striker Nicolas Anelka received his marching orders in the middle of the tournament after falling out with head coach Raymond Domenech. France only picked up one point and one goal in three group stage matches.

Northern Ireland will build on their youth

Michael O’Neill is expected to select a youthful Northern Ireland squad for their international friendly with France

Despite failing to secure a World Cup spot, Northern Ireland rewarded Michael O’Neill with a new contract extension that will last until 2032, and the 56-year-old head coach immediately repaid the faith from his nation with a 1-0 win over Guinea yesterday.

Tom Atcheson scored the winning goal in Cadiz, as he headed in Isaac Price’s cross during the ninth minute. However, the 19-year-old defender’s night turned sour 18 minutes from the end, as he was sent off for his challenge on Abdoul Karim Traore – a rookie mistake for the Blackburn Rovers youngster.

Northern Ireland will deploy a young squad, but they have several veterans who can create new International Friendly 2026 highlights. One of them is 36-year-old Josh Magennis, who has 12 goals in 88 caps.

History

France and Northern Ireland have met six times previously, but not since 1999. Les Bleus have never lost, and they have only conceded one goal against the Green and White Army (W4, D2).

Before losing to Ivory Coast yesterday, France were on a nine-game unbeaten run (W8, D1). They’ve also netted at least two goals in 11 successive games, although they’re looking to end a frustrating run of four matches without a clean sheet. Moreover, France have yet to lose at home in their five previous outings (W4, D1).

Northern Ireland have lost their last three games against Top 10 European nations in the FIFA rankings by an aggregate tally of 9-2. Michael O’Neill has fielded the nation’s youngest side on record since World War 2, with an average age of just 22.1.

During the UEFA qualifiers, France secured their World Cup spot with ease by finishing on top of Group D in the first round. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland had to settle for third in Group A behind Slovakia and Germany. As a result, Northern Ireland need to go through Path A to get in, but the Green and White Army subsequently lost 2-0 to Italy.
