Premier League: Chelsea Must Stop the Bleeding at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea vs Manchester United

Liam Rosenior is under immense pressure ahead of Chelsea’s next Premier League game against Manchester United on Saturday, as this is a must-win game for him to keep the Blues alive in the tightening Champions League race

Since their 4-2 win over Wrexham in the FA Cup fifth round, Chelsea have only won one of their last six games across all competitions, a 7-0 rout of League One side, Port Vale. Because of the Blues’ poor run of results, many have questioned Rosenior’s long-term future, citing his inexperience as a manager.

Similar to Rosenior’s situation, Manchester United are facing coaching questions of their own. Michael Carrick got off to a brisk start when he was appointed interim, but the Red Devils are in a mini-slump, which they hope to end this weekend.

This is undoubtedly a huge match for both sides, and SBOTOP has you covered with today’s preview.

Talking Points

Fernandez will return for Chelsea

Enzo Fernandez is expected to be back in the mix for Chelsea after the Argentine midfielder served his club-imposed two-match ban for his comments about living in Madrid, and head coach Liam Rosenior admitted that his absence was keenly felt during their 3-0 loss against Manchester City last time out.

With Fernandez on the sidelines, Chelsea struggled to gain control of the ball, as they had just 37.3-per cent possession. As a result, the Blues have now lost back-to-back Premier League games by at least three goals for the first time since February 2018 under Antonio Conte.

Fernandez’s impending return to the starting XI would relegate Andrey Santos to the bench. He will likely link up with Moises Caicedo in a double pivot setup, with Cole Palmer as the No. 10, and Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro, and Estevao up front.

Besides Fernandez, Chelsea are also hoping that Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Jamie Gittens, Filip Jorgensen, and Reece James can return this Saturday. All of them were upgraded to questionable after sitting out against the Sky Blues.

Manchester United have a centre-back crisis

Manchester United have hit a nadir under Michael Carrick, dropping points in two consecutive games. Following their 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, the Red Devils lost 2-1 to Leeds United after a 23-day hiatus.

Lisandro Martinez was sent off for pulling the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin in their last Premier League clash

During this stretch, they lost two key centre-backs to red cards. Harry Maguire received his marching orders against the Cherries, and Lisandro Martinez got his against the Whites. With Matthijs de Ligt (back) nowhere close to a return, the Red Devils only have Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven as their centre-half players on the roster.

Red Devils fans are also concerned about the team’s frontline. Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Amad Diallo haven’t played up to par, as none of them has scored since their 3-1 win against Aston Villa more than a month ago.

History

The Chelsea-Manchester United rivalry is the most drawn fixture in Premier League history, with 27 draws. Seven of those draws have been goalless, and their 20 score draws are also the most in the English top-flight.

Manchester United secured a 2-1 win at Old Trafford last September. Robert Sanchez’s early red card after his reckless tackle on Bryan Mbeumo set the tone for the Red Devils, though the hosts also lost Casemiro in the first half after two yellow cards. Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Trevoh Chalobah were on the scoresheet for their respective clubs, managed by Ruben Amorim and Enzo Maresca at the time.

Chelsea have lost only one of their last 12 Premier League home matches against Manchester United (W6, D5), and are looking to win three in a row against them at Stamford Bridge for the first time since April 2006. Meanwhile, Manchester United are aiming for a league double over Chelsea for just the second time after the 2019-20 campaign.

Betting Tip

The Premier League 2026 odds predict another close affair between the Blues and the Red Devils. Chelsea have the slight advantage at 2.21, whereas Manchester United aren’t far behind at 2.79, and a draw is at 3.42 in the 1X2 market.

Football fans shouldn’t expect too many goals from this fixture, but there will be enough Premier League 2026 highlights to go by at Stamford Bridge. Besides our recommended bet, bettors may also add Under 3.25 at 1.73, Under 2.75 at 2.23, and even Total Goals 2-3 at 2.14 to the parlay. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of Manchester United – the result of the reverse fixture – yields a handsome payout of 10.50 your bet.
