Serie A: Napoli Seek Retribution Against Atalanta

Atalanta vs Napoli

Two of the Italian top-flight’s best teams will square off this weekend, as Atalanta host Napoli at the Gewiss Stadium on Saturday night. Napoli are on top of the Serie A table with 47 points and Atalanta are the third seed with 43 points. Inter Milan are sandwiched between them with 44 points, and they have a match against Empoli on Sunday. Depending on this weekend’s Serie A 2025 results, we might see a new club on top of the pack.

Atalanta are undefeated in their last 15 Serie A games, but they’ve dropped points in their previous three matches. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side hasn’t won a game in all competitions since winning against Empoli 3-2 before Christmas.

Napoli have five consecutive league wins since a 0-1 loss against Lazio last December, and they have almost a full week of rest following their 2-0 victory against Hellas Verona.

Talking Points

Atalanta need maximum points

Despite their unbeaten run, Atalanta have never won a game since December 23. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men were held by Lazio (1-1), Udinese (0-0), and Juventus (1-1), and they suffered a 2-0 loss against Inter Milan during the Supercoppa Italiana semi-finals at the start of the 2025 calendar year.

Top scorer Mateo Retegui was out for three consecutive games during La Dea’s winless run. However, he returned against Juventus last Wednesday just in time to salvage a point by coming off the bench and scoring the equaliser in the 78th minute after Pierre Kalulu’s goal. With 13 league goals, Retegui leads Atalanta in scoring, and he’s the current frontrunner of the Capocannionere race.

Gian Piero Gasperini might bring Retegui off the bench again if he is cautious about his star forward. If this is the case, expect Ademola Lookman and Charles De Ketelaere to lead in the final third, and they have combined for 14 league goals and 10 assists this season.

Atalanta will miss key defenders against Napoli because Sead Kolasinac must serve his suspension, and Odilon Kossounou picked up a new injury. Gianluca Scamacca remains a long-term absentee.

Napoli lose important piece

Napoli are starting to adapt to life without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, as they sold their star winger to PSG for a €70 million transfer fee that is hard to resist. It’s a huge blow to I Partenopei’s Scudetto hopes because Kvaratskhelia was one of their top scorers, with five league goals and three assists.

With Kvaratskhelia gone, Antonio Conte tried to start different players in his place. Leonardo Spinazzola got the nod in Napoli’s 3-0 victory over Fiorentina, and Matteo Politano got to start in the team’s 2-0 win over Hellas Verona.

I’m guessing that Politano will start again versus Atalanta (instead of Spinazzola) since he is a more attack-oriented player. Politano will link up with David Neres and Romelu Lukaku in the final third, with Scott McTominay as an auxiliary attacker.

History

Atalanta have secured back-to-back 3-0 victories against Napoli in Serie A, including the reverse fixture last November at the Diego Maradona Stadium, as Ademola Lookman (brace) and Mateo Retegui found the back of the net for La Dea. If Atalanta win again this weekend, they will have a three-game winning streak against Napoli for the first time since February 1998.

However, Atalanta lost their last three Serie A home matches against Napoli, their longest ongoing streak at home against an opponent in the Italian top-flight. It is also worth noting that La Dea have scored in their last 25 Serie A home matches (63 goals, 2.5 goals per match).

During their five-game winning streak, Napoli secured three consecutive clean sheets, and they plan to do so in four straight matches for the first time under Antonio Conte.

Betting Tip

The Serie A 2025 odds expect an action-packed contest in Bergamo on Saturday evening. Because they’re playing at home, Atalanta have a slight advantage at 2.31 odds, whereas Napoli aren’t far behind at 2.92, and a draw is at 3.06 in the 1X2 market.

SBOTOP football fans and bettors can expect goals between these two sides (unlike in the reverse fixture), but the hosts are likely to score more goals than the visitors again. Besides our recommended bet, check out alternatives like Over 2.00 at 1.59, Over 2.25 at 1.87, Over 2.50 at 2.14, and Total Goal 2-3 at 1.97. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 3-0 in favour of Atalanta – the result of their last two meetings – has a staggering offer of 25.00 your bet.
