K-League: Ulsan Hyundai to Assert Dominance Over the Suwon Bluewings

Suwon Bluewings vs Ulsan Hyundai

This second matchday preview of the K-League will feature two clubs at the opposite sides of the spectrum as the Suwon Bluewings will host Ulsan Hyundai at the Suwon World Cup stadium this weekend.

The home team had a rough time last week when they lost against the defending champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors despite a valiant effort and they are hopeful that they turn things this time around.

On the other hand, Ulsan Hyundai’s revenge tour is in full swing when they eviscerated Sangju Sangmu in their first game and they are brimming with confidence right now.

Our K-League 2020 odds heavily favour the road team in this one. Ulsan Hyundai are placed at 1.93 in the 1×2 market while the Suwon Bluewings are at 3.75 and the odds of a draw are at 3.40.

Can the Bluewings finally snap their losing streak against the visitors? Or will Ulsan Hyundai maintain their fine form? Today, SBOBET take a look at both of these teams.

Talking Points

Can Lee Lim-saeng win over the Suwon faithful?

The Suwon Bluewings looked like a team with no direction as they have been quite inconsistent in big stretches last campaign, which is why they had a lot of work to do prior to this season.

The Lee Lim-saeng-managed club was able to get some key signings during the offseason. They were able to sign the likes of Doneil Henry, Sulejman Krpic, and Kim Min-woo to boost their depth. Although it remains to be seen on how will they fit in with the rest of the roster, adding experience still counts for something.

Adam Taggart is tasked to lead Suwon to get their first K-League win of the season
Suwon Bluewings’ Adam Taggart scores a goal against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC

It’s no secret that much of the Bluewings’ fortunes rest on the shoulders of Adam Taggart. The Aussie striker, after all, is the league-leading scorer from last term with 16 goals under his belt.

However, despite a successful season individually, Taggart appeared to be disgruntled at times with the team due to the questionable decisions by his manager.

The Bluewings can’t rely too much on Adam Taggart’s individual brilliance, so Lee Lim-saeng should definitely prioritise getting the most out of his other players with sound coaching and solid player development.

The 48-year-old manager doesn’t seem to favour giving a whole lot of minutes to his young standouts. But perhaps he may change his mind this season because of the improvement of Oh Hyeon-gu.

The 18-year-old forward showed glimpses of potential last season and he was rewarded a professional contract with the team during the last winter transfer window. Only time will tell on how much playing time he will get, but he is definitely a player to look out for if you’re a fan of the Bluewings.

Lee Lim-saeng appears to be on the hot seat should he continue to underwhelm this season. And with their boisterous fans desperate for some semblance of glory, the Suwon Bluewings will have their work cut out for them this campaign.

Ulsan Hyundai playing with a stacked deck

Last season, Ulsan Hyundai were close to winning their first title since 2005 up until when team boss Kim Do-hoon was meted a five-game suspension that ultimately led to their downfall.

However, the title race last year was still as close as it gets since it was decided only by the goal difference. Both Jeonbuk and Ulsan had 79 points but a single goal is what separated the two.

The Horangi lost some players during the offseason, but they were able to get some marquee signings too.

Ulsan brought back the “Blue Dragon” in Lee Chung-yong who offers a wealth of experience since he had stints playing for the Bolton Wanderers and Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Ulsan Hyundai were also able to add another fine striker in Bjorn Johnsen, who was the second top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie two years ago. He and Junior Negao should torch opposing defences while creating numerous K-League 2020 highlights.

They’ve also reloaded their backline by acquiring Jo Hyeon-woo who should be their main guy in between the goalposts. The hero from South Korea’s upset over Germany in the 2018 World Cup was swooped up by the team essentially for free when his deal with Daegu ran out.

All of their new players should fit well with their current core as they try to make another run for the K-League title.

History

Ulsan Hyundai have dominated the Suwon Bluewings over these past few years, making this a one-sided matchup.

Overall, they’ve faced each other in 41 matches with Ulsan Hyundai winning 17 times, Suwon Bluewings winning 12 times, along with 12 draws.

Betting Tip

Suwon Bluewings vs Ulsan Hyundai Ulsan Hyundai Asian Handicap -0.50 @1.92
May 16, 15:30 GMT+8

Ulsan Hyundai are in good position to bring home their second consecutive win for this season because of their deep roster and fine form.

While the Suwon Bluewings will try to make it tough against the visitors, the midfield disparity between these two teams may be too much for them especially since Terry Antonis was meted a two-game suspension last week.
